General Course Information
Course Descriptions
ISAK Level 1 course is an introductory course in Anthropometry and Anthropometric technique. It includes both theoretical and practical components. Theory components include topics such as anatomy, body composition and somatotyping. Practical application includes measurement of a restricted profile, which includes a total of 21 measurements (4 base measurements, 6 girths, 8 skinfolds and 3 bone breadths).
ISAK Level 2 course is for professionals that need more advanced and detailed anthropometric data than what the ISAK Level 1 course offers. This course includes more in-depth theory components such as proportionality, 5-way fractionation procedures of body composition, and calculating muscle-to-bone ratio for determining maximal FFM potential of athletes. Students will learn ISAK’s Full Profile, which includes a total of 42 measurements (4 base measurements, 13 girths, 8 skinfolds, 8 bone lengths and 9 bone breadths) within a more strict error tolerance than the ISAK Level 1.
While the courses last 3 days, there's a post-course requirement to measure 20 subjects within 4 months. Upon successful review by the instructor, you will receive your certification.
The certification is valid for 4 years. After that, a recertification evaluation by a Level 3 instructor is required to renew.
What You Will Learn
At the end of the Level 1 course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper manipulation, calibration and maintenance of various anthropometry equipment
- Demonstrate adequate technical precision in measuring 4 base measurements, 8 skinfolds, 6 girths and 3 bone breadths
- Compute technical error of measurement (TEM) of anthropometric data to verify your precision and accuracy at an introductory level.
- Calculate Somatotype and describe its applications to health and sport profiling
- Describe the utility, limitations and assumptions of assessing percent body fat using the two component model
- Describe how to integrate a Physique Assessment System (restricted profile) in various sports settings
At the end of the Level 2 course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper manipulation, calibration and maintenance of all anthropometry equipment
- Demonstrate adequate technical precision in measuring 4 base measurements, 8 skinfolds, 13 girths 9 bone length/heights and 9 bone breadths
- Compute technical error of measurement (TEM) of anthropometric data to verify your precision and accuracy is within research standards
- Apply the principals of geometric similarity to scale anthropometric data and compare the dimensional and functional characteristics of athletes of different sizes
- Calculate Somatotype, describe its applications to health & sport profiling and how to apply somatotype statistics and the three dimensional nature of the somatochart
- Describe limitations, assumptions and errors associated with various body composition assessment methodologies and differentiate anatomical versus chemical models.
- Describe how to integrate a Physique Assessment System in various sports settings using the Full Profile

Who It's For
While students come from many different backgrounds, many are Registered Dietician, sports scientists, trainers, and other related professionals who want to advance their skills and knowledge in the application of anthropometry to athletes.
What to Wear
This is a hands-on course, and students will be practicing on each other.
Women should bring a halter top or sports bra and shorts or two-piece swim suit to change into for the practical sessions.
Men should bring shorts will be required to remove their shirt for the practical sessions.
